Chiomenti Studio Legale Lawyers Visit CIETAC

Mr. Domenico Di Pietro, Mr. Amedeo Celori from Chiomenti Studio Legale and Ms. Dawn Chen, Senior Group Legal Adviser of PCCW visited CIETAC on August 27, 2008. Mr. Yu Jianlong, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC received the visit.

Chiomenti Studio Legale, first established in Rome, Italy, has opened 10 offices around the world with over 300 lawyers practicing in corporate business and other commercial-related areas. In recent years, they spot an increasing tendency among their clients to use CIETAC arbitration clause. Therefore, they are keen to know more about CIETAC and recommend CIETAC arbitration to more clients.

Mr. Yu Jianlong briefly introduced to the guests about the history, the organization, and the development of caseload of CIETAC in recent years. He further elaborated on the reform and breakthroughs made by CIETAC Arbitration Rules 2005 from the aspects of approaches of hearing, appointment of arbitrators, parties' autonomy and the time limit to render arbitral awards etc.. He also informed the guests of the judicial support of Chinese courts to arbitration and the good dialogue between CIETAC and Chinese courts.

The guests were impressed by the reform and development of CIETAC rules and practice. They especially spoke highly of the CIETAC practice allowing the tribunal to decide or the parties to agree on the application of adversarial or inquisitorial approach in hearings. The supportive attitude and the good communication between CIETAC and the Chinese courts also enhanced their confidence in conducting arbitration in China. The guests also expressed their interest in having joint programs with CIETAC to introduce CIETAC arbitration to Italian lawyers and to encourage them to use CIETAC arbitration.
