The Conference on Construction Dispute Resolution: Arbitration and Adjudication, jointly organized by China International and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and China Construction Industry Association (CCIA) was held in Beijing on September 26, 2008.

Mr. Yu Jianlong, the Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC and Mr. Wu Tao, the Deputy Secretary-General of CCIA made the opening speeches. They pointed out that the construction had been pillar industry of Chinese national economy ever since the reform and opening policy was adopted. In the past decade particularly, the growth rate of Chinese construction industry averaged 20% per year. It is anticipated that such a momentum of increase will be sustained in the following decade. However, accompanying the rapid development of construction industry is the increase of disputes, which to some extent has impaired the sound development of the construction enterprises and even the construction market as a whole. It is therefore a common concern of Chinese construction and legal professionals as to how to resolve construction disputes in an effective and efficient manner. Upon the request of the enterprises and the market, CIETAC and CCIA organized the conference to learn the advanced practice of foreign countries and to set up a dispute resolution mechanism tailored for Chinese construction market.
The conference was divided into four sessions: 1) the main features of construction disputes in practice; 2) arbitration and the resolution of construction disputes; 3) practice of adjudication in the world of construction; and 4) application and development of adjudication in Chinese construction industry. Construction and legal experts from different jurisdictions such as China, UK, and Hong Kong discussed about the risks and prevention of construction disputes, and introduced the practice and research of dispute resolution mechanism in the field of construction, with special reference to the operation of adjudication. Mr. Wang Chengjie, the Deputy Secretary-General of CIETAC elaborated on the framework planning of CIETAC adjudication system to be set up in the near future.

Nearly 200 representatives from construction enterprises and law firms attended the conference. After exchanging ideas with the speakers, they expressed strong interest in and support of developing adjudication mechanism in Chinese construction industry.
